Sertoma Past International President Dr. Frederick G. McFall, Jr., passed away on April 28 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was 81.
Born in Tampa, Florida, on June 8, 1928, Dr. McFall graduated from the Emory University School of Dentistry in 1953. He served two and a half years in the Air Force Medical Corps. Upon his return from military service, Dr. McFall completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Alabama Medical Center and in September, 1959, he opened his practice in St. Petersburg.
Dr. McFall joined the St. Petersburg Day Sertoma Club in 1960 and quickly moved into Club leadership roles, being elected to the Club’s Board of Directors in 1961, Club Vice President in 1962 and Club President in 1963. He served two terms as Governor of the West Florida District, earning the Distinguished Governor’s Award in 1964 and 1965. In 1966, he was elected to the International Board of Directors from the Southern Region and served as International Vice President from 1968 to 1971. He was elected International President at the 1971 Sertoma Convention in Denver.
As a Sertoman, Dr. McFall served on the Cleft-Palate Team of the Speech and Hearing Clinic of St. Petersburg and on the Clinic’s Board of Directors and was named the Club’s Sertoman of the Year. In addition to his Sertoma service, Dr. McFall taught Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church and served on the Church’s Finance Committee and Board of Trustees. His interest in finance led him to become one of the founders of several local banks. He held membership in numerous professional groups, served on the Committee of 100, Board of Directors for Bankers Insurance Group and several other corporate boards. He also served on the Academy Prep School Board Committee and was an active member of a local Barber Shop Quartet group. In an article that appeared in the September-October 1971 issue of Sertoman, Dr. McFall said the following. “We can meet any goal we set. Our only limit is our imagination and our dreams.”
Dr. McFall was an accomplished golfer and avid hunter and fisherman. He also ran a successful quarter horse operation.
He is survived by Virginia, his wife of 57 years, sons Frederick J. McFall III and James W. McFall, Sr., daughter Stephanie Young, and six grandchildren. Dr. McFall’s life was celebrated at a memorial service held at First United Methodist Church on May 3.
